Advice on JS carousel.

I would like to incorporate something like the fixture carousel on this site :
AFL.com.au
into a website I'm working on.
I would prefer not to use any libraries apart from jQuery or prototype if possible and best case scenario would be writing the function from scratch as it is easiest to customize and I will learn a lot from it.
Basically all I want is some pointers as to how I should go about creating it i.e. relevant links and tutorials + advice.
