In Topic: Looking for alternative
18 January 2013 - 10:11 PM
Since my last post I've figured out a way I can still use JIRA, within the limit.
I've also installed ChiliProject to try out - looking good so far. Going to see about Redmine, since I've seen it and used it a lot in the past.
Thanks for the suggestions! -

I'm hosting a few people who need a control panel (add FTP users, Databases, etc), [cut]

There's a large number of free hosting control panels... Webmin/Virtualmin, ZPanel, ISPConfig and VHCS to name a few. I haven't seen any that have as many features as cPanel does, though. cPanel is a beast and can be quite messy at times, but to the end-users it's very user-friendly and their support team is very good.
If you had to choose one, which would it be? (Other than cPanel)

Install a virtualisation layer like Linux-Vserver or OpenVZ, and then you can use a cPanel VPS license. These are US$15 per month directly from cPanel, but you should be able to get them cheaper through your data centre. Mine costs US$10 per month from HiVelocity. The VPS version of cPanel is identical to the dedicated server version.
The other thing I don't like about cPanel is it forces you to use Apache + PHP + MySQL. I'd rather use nginx + php5-fpm + mysql -

Before I launch an instance, I just want to make sure of a few things.
- I can get the Micro EC2 instance free for an entire year, right?
- How about the S3?
Can anyone share any details on this? - I can get the Micro EC2 instance free for an entire year, right?

Server at HiVelocity
- Core 2 Duo 3.00 Ghz (was meant to be a 1.86 GHz but they were out of those when I was getting the server set up, so they gave me the next highest they had
)
- 4 GB RAM
- 160 GB hard drive
- 1500 GB monthly transfer
US$55 for server + US$8 for 8 extra IPs + US$10 for cPanel license = US$73 per month
(shared between 4 people. Hosting some friends which is why I've got cPanel. Extra IPs are for 6 or 7 virtual servers hosted on this box)
Do your friends really need cPanel?
