If the politicians had actually done more than a few seconds research, they'd soon realise that most browsers have the option to turn cookies off completely anyway, which completely negates the point of this directive. For the people who are so paranoid about what's being stored, give them a fools-guide to turn them off and also tell them not to complain when pretty much the entire web stops working. Unfortunately, these people are the most vocal and the politicians are just following them blindly, without the slightest shred of prior research it would appear.

All I can see this doing is alienating EU businesses as if a user sees a popup they don't understand, they'll perceive it as an error message and then just hit the back button and try again till they get a non-EU company; thereby crippling the trade of those EU companies. The current opt-out system for cookies is a lot more efficient than this proposed opt-in system, whereby clicking any link will inevitably bring a whole host of popups.

And it won't help users anyway, as all I'm going to do is add it to my ToS :P

I like the idea, but they are doing it wrong. Within my browser I just have it setup to accept cookies only from the site I'm on. Cookies can stalk you and some (back in the day?) can plant viruses as well.

Bastard politicians.
And no point wasting your time on the petition, they couldn't give a fuck about them, it won't change anything...

This is a strange one though, usually they go out of there way to screw over the people in order to increases profits for businesses or just anyone that will give them money, but this is going to actually hurt EU businesses in addition to making the web browsing experience less enjoyable for the majority of people.

Do you want to log into wdR every time you visit? How about any other site that requires a login to access most of the site?

Edit: Also, would this contain sessions as well, considering that they're technically cookies.

They're technically not cookies. Sessions can use cookies, but don't nessecarily need to, they can use the GET string as well.

Depends. Depends. Not everything is in PHP either ;) I mean you could base a session on IP then. A session itself is just data held on the server. However it's common to store the ID via a cookie.

I signed, but seriously, this will NEVER become reality. Almost the entire internet would be affected. Never.

Things are not explained by the past, they are explained by what happens right now. That creates the past, and it begins here. That's the birth of responsibility.

Because that's secure. Imagine your in the library, using your online banking. Everyone else could use it, too.

never mentioned anything about security. Also yes there it is secure if you take a look at the headers, besides I'm sure they would add some unquie ID to those headers if this were to take affect.
