Post count

So this is something every forum I've ever played a part in has had an issue with: people thinking the post count is important enough to spam for. There are an ENORMOUS number of posts in General Discussion, due in part to the fact that it's really easy to post there and posts don't have to be well thought out or factual or informative or anything like that. And that's fine, but when people start posting crap +1 posts and spamming and all the rest because it's raising their post count, it's an issue. And that's been happening a LOT lately.

Before I go on, know that if you post in this thread to oppose the idea I'm about to suggest, I reserve the right to ignore what you're saying if your "Most Active In" forum on your profile page is "General Discussion".

So yeah. I'm considering making General Discussion (and also possibly this forum and Tech News Talk) not contribute toward your post count, then updating everyone's post count to reflect that change. And before anyone suggests it, no, I will NOT be doing this with the Introductions forum, as welcoming new members is one of the most important parts of getting new people involved in a forum. If post count helps that to be more active, then so be it :)

Thoughts?

And you're going to disable +1 in GD too?

I honestly hate it that I'm most active in GD :(

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. There are some people who mainly contribute in General Discussion, including me (a bit :P) and thats fine, but those people are literally spamming the shit out of the forums just to raise their post count really quick.

So yes, I like that idea.

Please implement this asap. A lot of user's might be hurt to find over half their post count is from GD forum.

Or maybe just make it so from now on it doesn't affect it.

You could also add 2 seperate counts, "helpful" posts and laid back posts. That way, people try to get more helpful posts than lazy posts

This so isn't worth the time it would take me to write custom code ;-) Not a bad idea, though.

Good idea, all the way.

I actually wondered why posts count in GD before. Other forums i know don't do it that way.

I think this is a good idea, but leave Tech News Talk counting for post count though.

EDIT: Oops, I'm not active in General Discussion. :o Only about 1/5 of my posts, though... ;)

I think it would be a good idea, if you even read this Kyek as I have half my Posts in General Discussion, but I only have 2 posts a day so I don't see myself as a spammer and I try not to.
As I suggested you could also restrict Posts/Day or just Posts/Day in General Discussion so if you could only Post let's say 5 times a day in General Discussion you have to think twice if you really want to Post or not.

Agreed. You said no more 'this' or '+1' right :P

But I like the idea of having a cap limit in the 'spam' forums instead of not counting it in general.

Despite the fact that nearly 250 of my posts are in that forum (making it the one I'm most active in...damn), I agree with this. It won't solve the problem, though, since a lot of threads in the web-related tech forums are being spammed with +1s. I think everyone (including myself ;)) is guilty of doing it on occasion, but there's too many people pretty much reposting content already there, or commenting on things they're not really qualified to do so.

In short, this seems like a difficult issue to solve, but removing the more laid back forums from members' post counts seems like a good start :)

I wouldn't want to limit the number of times you could post -- that could get annoying an interfere with good conversation. An argument could be made to only allow it to count your posts in that forum up to a certain amount per day, but then we're getting into more custom coding that's just not worth the hassle ;-)

It's important to note that if I *do* this, it's very reversible. If it was a bad move, I can just make posts in General Discussion count again and recalculate everyone's postcount. I'd be thinking longer and harder about this if that weren't the case ;-)

Thanks god! Seriously!
A couple times this week I was thinking of writing some large, kick-ass critique thread, but I just would have earned flame anyway.
This forum has potential and could be a much cooler place then it is right now.

Firstly you have this huge bunch of spamming, useless posts and random repping.
That pisses me off and it was the reason I didn't posted here for a long time a while ago and still don't post that much.
It is kind of frustrating to write a long post which explains the problem, gives a solution and especially for me as German to write in a proper language and seeing some random guys coming along throw some Spam into the thread and get 4+ for they post.
Often my post also aren't recognized, between this whole Spam so I'm asking myself:
Why should I sit down, spend 10 minutes of my life trying to help someone with a problem and find myself unrecognized and 10 minutes of my life wasted?

Here we come to a second thingy that really bugs me.
There are just a few people that really know what they are talking about, much more people who think they know what they are talking about and a slightly smaller group of people who at least acknowledge that they have no clue about the whole mater.
Don't get me wrong, it's totally fine to not be an web-guru or something, I just hate it to read posts of people which talk like the smartest developer on earth, but what they are say is totally crap.
I could give names here, but I don't want to offense someone personally.
I've seen people in here who talk like professionals but had never worked on an industrial-level project.
That may or may not be because most of the users in here are under 20.

Damn, that feels good.
I think I'm done now for a month or so :D.

Then just do it ;-)
