As in, you were planning it already, or you decided to do it now?

The second I saw his post, I wanted to start one, but I can't come up with anything... So I just started making a new wdR design :P

Bumping this again :(
Probably still the effect of the holidays, but I doubt it.. Read the the "is this site dying" thread D:

I really think having something like this would be a good idea.
Also, maybe put something with more valuable in the lot than ribbons? Make it a proper hackaton; just an example, but why not have have an iconset as prize for a design section?

I agree, but perhaps expand "PHP/MySQL" to any backend server with any database (for those of us who prefer a non-PHP language).

@Lukinator, Appulo.us has been down for over a year (maybe two?). There are plenty of other sites that will allow you to pirate to your heart's content. Please be respectful of Kyek's decision to close the site and do NOT spam our forum. I will not block you this time. If you are interested in web development feel free to stick around.

Thanks.

Same, I haven't been on here in ages but I have the thread on e-mail updates hehe.
Although this would be the worst possible timing for me as I have 6 exams in the next 2-weeks.

As a side note: I just set up nodejs with couchdb and coffeescript :> Gonna get my js on. (See what i did there? js on. Yeah, that happened.)

I hope there'll be another competition soon :( I haven't even been in one (missed the first one), and I think it'll be really exciting! Please think about putting one together some time?

I would be willing to organize one in a few weeks, but I wouldn't have any compensation just for the hell of it. LMK

I hope so! I'm thinking of organising one just because I want to seem some awesome competition! Its holidays for me now, so I don't have anything better to do :P But I have a feeling people want somebody more "experienced" to organise it, so could somebody who is free make one so everybody can join in on the fun? :D

I can do one in May. What kind of topics are you guys into? I think I might do two or three categories if I were to do this, probably be unfair for some people to be placed against the more knowledgable wdR'ians.

I can do an algo competition soon, if anyone is interested. It will be able to be done in any language.

Interested.

Perhaps for mine, some sort of simple portfolio management site. Something with practical usage. I'll have to think about that more.

Yeah do a few different ones!
Below is an idea, and what I would do if I was organising one:

Come up with a ficticious company, and then have 3-5 things that needed to be designed for them, within the scope of web development (obviously). The company can be anything (finance, recruitment, catering, basicly anything), but it needs to be clear what sort of company they are, and what they do.

Then, each person can choose one of the following chanllenges to take part in:

1) Design a logo for them! This is straight forward enough!

2) Do a (basic) company website. Obviously, this wouldn't need to be too complicated as its not like people have enough time to design a website for somebody that doesn't exist! Even just a one page site that includes a place holder for the logo, some cool (relavent) images etc. is fine!

3) Design a basic web app that will help this company in some way, in the particular field they are in. (Whether it be a simple employee manager like thing, or an inventory tracker). Of course, these apps probably already exist, but the point is to design them from scratch, and show the ability to make something user friendly etc.

--------------

The three winning entries will then be combined (logo put on the site, site hosted somewhere temporarily, web app intergrated into site - even just linked to from the site really), and then the final product will be displayed for a week or so for everybody to see what the best of the webDev community was able to come up with!

--------------

Just my idea anyway! If you think it's shit, well....tell me why, and come up with something better! :D
