Hey guys

The worst thing about getting to a new forum. Writing your introduction post. Yeah. This is mine :-). I seriously don't remember how I got here, although it was just 30min ago. But it is early morning in middle Europe, isn't it ;-)

So yeah, hey everyone :-). I am a Front- and Backend-Developer from Germany. I am into PHP / MySQL almost 7 years now. After starting I soon realized that my homepages won't be so nice to see without knowledge of HTML/CSS/Javascript (I almost hate the latter), so I learned Frontend-Coding stuff. After developing a few little homepages to learn basic skills and havin a almost one year pause, I started to develop OO Applications about 2.5 years ago and started using the Yii Framework about 1 year ago.

My biggest project is about to be finished by the end of the year. I am the serverside developer of www.dungeondeities.com. Additionally I am into two small projects about managing simple and fast transactions on my university's second hand book market. While getting more requests for setting up small homepages with CMS features I am into Drupal and Wordpress. Since there are always bugs with drupal and things you cannot do with wordpress I decided to use the yii framework to build a CMS that fits my needs. (Something small, no Drupal-Killer, nothing that will be published to the public and nothing that will revolutionize the web ;-) )

I hope I can contribute to some problems here and in Exchange get my own solved. :)

You're a front-end developer... that hates JavaScript? *almost hates JavaScript. I love JavaScript, allows me to throw a lot of shit into the bottom of a page and use JavaScript to query the users that should be in a drop down based on other options in a form. Also I've done a lot of sweet effects with it. What don't you like about JavaScript? Have you tried CoffeeScript?

YEA rails, I defiantly argue coffeescript is amazing, simply because its soo clean. I understand that hardcore js guys like callum may hate it but I can write the same thing in 1/3 the lines and be able to edit it that much better.

Could you, just for ONCE, resist the urge of making every welcome thread a ranting thread about some kind of technology that has been mentioned?
This thread is supposed to help the OP introduce himself and everybody else should be nice to him, ask questions regarding the OP or just close the effing thread.

There was a time before I knew about jquery and stuff like that. I programmed a 2D level editor for a game in Javascript and I did not really know how to debug it and it was awful. PHP was so easy, just telling you what went wrong (okay, in 80% of all cases) and Javascript just doesnt do anything and you are just standing in the rain ;-) That was the time I got to knew to javascript and I learned to hate it.

Today I use jquery and yeah, it is very cool what you can do with it. And AJAX just makes my heart laugh ;). But back then there was the first stone layed for my antipathy ;).

I did not try CoffeeScript. Is it an alternative to JQuery?

No it's a clean language, it's JavaScript without semicolons and parentheses ect. Then compiles into JavaScript for browser use.

CoffeeScript is evil. It's a different language, like JS but with a stupid syntax:

fadeOut = (element) ->
	$(element).animate opacity: 0

obj =
	str: "This is a str"
	obj:
		num: 0
		ary: ["#foo", ".bar", "#otah"]
	bool: true

override = false
friday = if new Date().getDay() is 5 then true else override

if obj.bool and friday
	fadeOut element for element in obj.obj.ary

Compiles to this (spoiler tags because it's so ugly):

How is that in any way cleaner? It's different, not cleaner.

Almost looks like Ruby got impregnated by AppleScript.

It's very based off ruby, it's more of a personal preference. The only thing that screws up my js is when I put in wrong ;'s . Coffeescript fixes that. Also you can write coffeescript very closely to js if you want. Switches and class inheritance are wonderful with CS. You can also embed js if you want. String interpolation is sexy as well. Check it out

It is when you use it correctly. I should start posting snippets of bad Python code and saying how shitty python is.
