Video editing

Does anyone have any recommendations for VFX software? I've found HitFilm so far, which is easy to use and great, but I'm preferably looking for something thats free, as I wouldn't be making money from using it.

Any suggestions?

To create visual effects i'd suggest you to use Adobe After Effects, for professional video editing Adobe Premier

Isn't After Effects like $1,000?

Any professional video editing software is going to be a couple hundred dollars. You can try it free for 30 days and then see if you can borrow it from some nice people on the internet.

I was fairly acquainted with AE but my Junior year in High School we used Final Cut Pro in my broadcasting class. I actually enjoyed FCP a bit more than AE (even though the interface was...ugly). Editing was easier and I liked the modular layout.

Arron FCPX is 300 and a much prettier interface.

As much as I do like most Apple products, I'd have to give another vote for the Creative Suite here. I've always preferred Premier + After Effects to Final Cut Pro + Motion. That's especially true with the new Final Cut Pro X. I do think the interface of FCPX looks nicer, but the workflow isn't as good so I'd rather have more functionality than a nicer looking UI.

Edit: Forgot to post this part:

For making a full video, yes FCP is better than AE. But that's because AE isn't meant for that. Premier is Adobe's alternative to Final Cut Pro, and After Effects is Adobe's alternative to Motion. And I like Premier better than I like Final Cut Pro. That and After Effects is much better than Motion, and is well integrated with Premier.

I personally recommend Sony Vegas Pro for decent video editing + simple effects. For creating complex professional effects, you should look into buying Adobe After Effects.

There is also this Lightworks Beta, which is a recently-made open source professional video editing software. As far as I can tell, it only handles very specific raw AVI files taken from professional video cameras. Its beta, what do you expect :P

You can get the full AE suit for $450, (Student discount). So if you're a student, then $450 is definately worth it!

However...yes you can always borrow it form nice people on the internet, as somebody else said.

I don't think any student could easily afford that.

If you just want Premier + After Effects, it's a lot less than that. $450 is Adobe's student price for Production Premium (which includes a lot more than just video editing software). Plus, some schools give you a greater discount. I'm probably buying that suite, and it's $348 at my school.

My FCPX was for begginers, if you wanna go real time you need

The Foundry suite (nuke ect)
original FCP (most people have both)
adobe stuff (ae, ps for bitmaps, premier for small mockups)
maya/c4d/some other kind (for background stuff not just 3d)
Some sort of server to hold footage, (im talking 42tb plus)
Set equipment, camera (duh)

Theres more but that'll get you started, at this point your cash is running LOW so I recommend buying a monkey and training him to operate a camera because real camera men need to be paid in dollars and monkeys will do it for bannana's

I don't normally advocate for pirating, but if you're not doing video editing for $$$, then might as well pirate the software.

NO, Bad, What you say? Those developers work hard and most of the stuff is possible because of some good engineers.

You don't have to pirate it, but with just replacing one file you can extend the trial time...
I don't get why they just don't add something like Microsoft does with TechNet. At least that one is available for a reasonable price.

Yeah, I'd rather not pirate it. I'm going to save up and get HitFilm, I've been using the demo and it seems great (only limitation in demo is you have to publish direct to YouTube and max. 30 seconds of export).

Good choice, I respect your urge to help developers and not pirate.

Like I said, I don't normally advocate pirating. But this is Adobe, who cares lol

They get enough dough from the ~millions~ of designers and producers in the industry anyways.

+ They have free 30-day trials for most of the software. I highly suggest you check those out before buying
