HTTPS over a SOCKS5 proxy?

Ive just started using an SSH tunnel, with a socks5 proxy to connect to the Internet from different places (public wifi etc) for security.

Its easy to do, and one of the best ways to ensure privacy while browsing (IMO anyway).

It's been working well, but, whenever I try to access a site that uses HTTPS it doesn't work (can't handle all that encryption?! :P)

I'm using a home server that's running Ubuntu. Any idea how to get this to work? Do I need to enable something (firewall maybe? Does Ubuntu even come with one...? And how would I do that?)

Any help would be good!
