wdR Designer Competition (feedback before starting)

Callum was pretty awesome and just held a competition for developers, but he said, "screw you designers," by not including you guys. Being a developer myself, I create some pretty awesome things, but they generally never make it to the public because I lack the ability to design something that is easy on the eyes. Lately I've been doing some game development, trying out some different languages, etc. Notch leant me some of his expertise and after a five, ten minute chat, I had a pretty badass game framework (about half the size in Java then a less feature-full C++ version I made). So now I've been talking to artsy people, trying to get them to create a game with me. Weither it be free or we start a company together, whatever, but hey, it would be awesome to be a indie game developer (before they start hiring psychs).

So I thought, what if I went to wdR and used the team finder, then I remembered Kyek's attempt. And his post didn't seem to labor any fruit. So what if we made it competitive and forced all entries to be licensed in Creative Commons share-alike. What if it it was so broad that anyone could enter anything? What if there was a freakin' reward if some set amount of entries were exceeded? What if you just gave me your thoughts below since it's 1.5am here-time?

Current thoughts on guidelines:
  • Sprite sheets should contain left, right, up, and down images.
  • You may design as many sprite sheets as you want
  • You must create an example level with these sprite sheets (this is what you will primarily be judged on)

The example level does not need to be programmed, just a simple image that uses your sprites/tilesets and shows how it would look in-game.

Top contenders will be picked by a panel of wdR'ians and perhaps some Blizzard art employees (they're kind of busy though). If there is not a large amount of people on this panel, there will also be a poll (by PM or post so only established wdR'ians [eg, not family members, friends, etc.] can vote). Alright, here is to hoping I didn't just say the stupidest thing at one thirty in the morning.

P.S. to developers: JavaDoc of the game engine I was talking about: http://dl.dropbox.co...-doc/index.html

That sounds awesome! I'm have ALWAYS wanted to make a game, but haven't had the time/money/knowledge-in-every-single-area-of-game-dev-stuff-there-is to do so. I think this'll be alot of fun!

By "submit anything you want", I think there should be just a few boundaries, or we'll have people submitting random stuff that has nothing to do with game-dev. Perhaps saying "submit sprite sheets, sample levels, a simple engine, whatever" and that will be judged.

Obviously, judging will need to be in several categories, as comparing a sprite sheet, and a small game engine is...well....hard.

Perhaps even a theme to the contest would be good? I've been in a few game design contests, and normally theres a theme or "key-word" or something to guide the whole contest. This word or theme can be as ambiguous as the chooser likes, and usually produces some interesting results.

Anyway, I'm definetely in! Hopefully you can get this thing started soon!

EDIT: Just checked out your Game Engine JavaDocs. Could prove quite useful! Is it on GitHub/are you planning on making it OpenSource/free/available-to-all? :P

EDIT 2: hey look it's your YouTube channel! Nice beard ya got going there :P

;) I'll update my post to make the example level more clear, just another image, not an application.

Glad to get some feedback on that, wasn't too sure. I dont want to limit people, but I also think they would like some direction.

I still want to add some features and document private methods. I think I'll OS the Sound class, but not 100% sure about the others. If I can release a game soon or determine that Java isn't worth it, I'll open source it. Otherwise I want to keep to myself until I release something (not only would releasing give a "competitor" a head start, but waiting until I have done an application with it will mean more features and clearer naming). I still have a few things I want to add and a few methods I would like to rename if I can find a better name.

My nickname at school seems to be "epic beard."
