I was looking at some old signatures that I used on previous forums and found a design that I liked - I tried to replicate it on my current avatar and here are the results:

The first one was based on the original design, and the second one was just me messing around.

Since no one on IRC seems to be talking, which one do you think is better? Should I use the first one but with different selections? Second one but with a different design?

I'm with Callum, those don't scale well at all unless you recreate it in a smaller size.

I like the first one better, although it won't scale very well. It won't look too bad if you are willing to scale it by hand, but I would stick with your current one. Also you have a few odd corners in the first image:
