Anybody had a server with this company before?

I'm thinking of getting a dedicated server from these guys: http://www.server4you.com/ (Server4U).

They look REALLY REALLY cheap for what I've seen before.

Has anybody seen anything cheaper? I mean...$64 for 8GB and 2TB HDD is pretty damn good.

I'm actually getting it for a game server, but was wondering if you knew about how reputable/reliable they are!

Thanks in advance! :D

Sounds… shit. I wouldn't trust them, if I were you.

Hmmmm.... It seems most of the reviews are because of "poor customer service".

Well, I guess that's how they lower costs. To keep costs low...its all self managed...

Check BurstNET, Joe's Datacenter or Hivelocity for good cheap US-based data centres. Or browse the dedicated server offer forums at WebHostingTalk. There's a few other good ones too. I'll find the links when I'm on my computer (am on my phone at the moment).

The prices you listed are very rare for a US-based host. My server at Hivelocity is something like $51ish per month (but I added extra IPs and such for it). Was a very special offer, though.

Repeat after me: jQuery is not JavaScript. It is not the answer to every JavaScript-related question. When you have to write some JavaScript, do not instantly react with "Oh, I'll do that with jQuery!"

Hetzner. That is all.

Actually, my friend had a server with server4you. He said the speed was decent and the I/O was decent but customer service was an issue.

... Also, please don't go with BurstNET. I've seen many reviews saying their datacentre connection is slow as fuck. Definitely don't go with VolumeDrive, don't even consider them.

Yep, and Hetzner's network is unbeatable. I have a vServer VQ12 which I used for minecraft, experimenting with things and more. I'm now using it to host an IRC daemon and a few websites (iCyan's website is hosted on it).

They had a little hiccup a few days ago with their network and their datacentre's connection went for a brief 10 seconds.

But my VPS has been up for almost 7 months now, that hiccup was the only problem I had with them and it was extremely minor.

Hetzner are based in Germany (I think) so they might not be the best for a game server.

For a game server I'd suggest something close to you. Hosting in Australia is crazy expensive, so maybe try find something in Singapore.

Yeah I realised they were in Germany, and it turns out from here (Aus), the ping is about 200 more than to the US...meaning I get about 450ms to any of their servers :(

Can you recommend anything closer? Singapore like you suggested?

Have you checked out Kimsufi? Their dedicated servers are really affordable. It's a reseller for OVH, which is known to have some minor issues from time to time, but overall isn't too bad. That's where my server is, and if I recall correctly this site as well.

The cleaning lady unplugs them every week to vacuum under the racks ;)

I've got three servers there now, and they're a pretty good host. The hardware isn't anything special in terms of brands, but performance-wise it's not bad for typical shared hosting. The main issues I have with OVH (though none of them are serious enough to make me switch hosts, so I'm just whining really) are:
  • That they modify all of the images they deploy your servers from, and all of the distributions suffer from terrible, terrible hacks. The real time monitoring "service" they provide, for instance, depends on a horrific pile of perl and bash scripts that frequently get stuck maxing out a core of a machine.
  • Then there's the patched kernel, which has been known to break a lot. Off the top of my head, their sources don't work with Xen and cause some iptables modules to fail to work correctly. I'd reinstall your machine via vKVM (which is, itself, unintuitive and extremely unreliable) or a self-hosted PXE netboot (I've got a script to do this with Red Hat systems, if you're interested).
  • They also charge too much for useful/necessary extras, like KVMoIP devices when you need to diagnose an issue preventing a machine from booting, IPv4 addresses and additional bandwidth.
  • Support sucks, but that's to be expected from a host that's pretty much paying you to take their hardware off their hands ;)
