Goodbye IE6

A present from Microsoft to developers
Microsoft just announced that they're enabling auto updates for all IE users rolled out globally over the next few months. This means all XP users will get IE8, and 7 users IE9. No user action required, just a silent update :D

I'll post a link to an article when I get home, I'm on my phone now

"Windows XP users on Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7 will be upgraded to version 8, and Windows Vista users will be pushed up the stairs to Internet Explorer 9. IE9 doesn't work on Windows XP." So does this mean IE7 is dying too??

Finally! I haven't actually designed to meet IE6 (sub-)standards for ages, but it'll be a relief to know I may never have to again. It'll be interesting to look at this once the updates begin: http://www.ie6countdown.com/#chart

WIRED, in their article about MS turning on automatic updates for IE: "If you don't want automatic updates, you can turn off Windows Update (though you should be aware that doing so could leave you with a insecure browser and operating system)."

They should also note that leaving automatic updates on has the same damn result.

;-).

But yeah -- keep in mind that the vast majority of IE 6 users are workplaces that can't upgrade because their software doesn't work on any other browser. So while this could effectively end IE 7 (as the crux of those users are reportedly home users), IE 6 users will just have updates turned off. Very frustrating :-/

It does not matter if it's turned on or off.. Only the commercial customers are forced to update by Microsoft with this not the corporate ones.

If it's just the home systems that are updating then that might be even better. The people that are used to screwed up websites are going to see better sites and go to work and think that their computer is broken. They might then ask why and the various tech departments are either going to have to constantly explain or just update.

What's interesting is that Microsoft itself has a webpage dedicated to tracking the demise of IE6. xD

Repeat after me: jQuery is not JavaScript. It is not the answer to every JavaScript-related question. When you have to write some JavaScript, do not instantly react with "Oh, I'll do that with jQuery!"

IE6 - IE 9: 20 hours at $40/h

Much better!
