At the moment, I'm pretty sure it's totally backwards compatible. I'm not sure it'll remain that way if they're making tweaks to the core codebase, so you might want to bear that in mind. That said, I've been using MariaDB as a MySQL replacement for a long time and have had no problems yet :D

Interesting that it supports accessing databases both as NoSQL-style key-value stores and via SQL queries!
